P1 1WHEREAS, There are multiple debilitating eye diseases that
2affect millions of Californians and others throughout the country;
3and
4WHEREAS, Coats Eye Disease is a rare eye disease that mostly
5afflicts young children and teenagers; and
6WHEREAS, Coats Eye Disease can cause blood vessels in one
7or both eyes to develop abnormally, causing leakage of blood into
8the eye resulting in trauma, damage, partial or total blindness, or
9even removal of the eye without early detection, treatment, or
10surgery; and
11WHEREAS, Coats eye disease is still not widely known and
12can be misdiagnosed by some in the medical community, even
13among retinal specialists; and
14WHEREAS, Coats eye disease is classified as an orphan disease
15yet impacts thousands in the state and nation; and
16WHEREAS, California leads the nation in many ways in
17scientific, academic, and commercial endeavors to find cures and
18treatments for many rare diseases or afflictions; and
19WHEREAS, California can be a leader in promoting awareness,
20research, study, and, ultimately, cures for many of these rare
21diseases, including Coats eye disease; and
22WHEREAS, Coats Eye Disease Awareness Day is an important
23nationwide tool for raising awareness among governmental
24officials, medical professionals, academic institutions, commercial
25ventures, and the public about this rare disease, and efforts to
P2 1increase early detection towards eventually finding a cure; now,
2therefore, be it
3Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That August
417, 2015, is proclaimed as Coats Eye Disease Awareness Day, in
5support of efforts to broaden awareness of this rare disease,
6promote and enable early detection and advance treatments, achieve
7prevention, further scientific research, and find a cure for this
8disease; and be it further
9Resolved,That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
10this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
