Senate Resolution No. 45—Relative to Curing Stomach Cancer Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, Stomach cancer is among the cancers with the
2lowest five-year survival rate; and

3WHEREAS, Out of 24,500 new cases diagnosed each year in
4the United States, 11,000 people will die in the first year of
5diagnosis; and

6WHEREAS, Eighty percent of stomach cancer is diagnosed at
7stage IV, which only has a 4 percent five-year survival rate; and

8WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than 72,000 people in the
9United States are currently living with stomach cancer; and

10WHEREAS, Stomach cancer has increased by 70 percent in
11young adults between 25 and 39 years of age since 1977; and

12WHEREAS, The overall survival rate for stomach cancer is 28
13percent and stomach cancer mortality rates have remained relatively
14unchanged over the past 30 years; and

15WHEREAS, Stomach cancer continues to be one of the leading
16causes of cancer-related death; now, therefore, be it

17Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
18designates the month of November 2015 as Curing Stomach Cancer
19Month in the State of California; and be it further

20Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
21this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
