LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 54, as amended, Nguyen. Sixtieth anniversary of Disneyland.

This measure wouldbegin insert honor the memory of Walt Disney and his lasting legacy of quality family entertainment, congratulate the Disneyland Resort and The Walt Disney Company on the 60th anniversary of Disneyland, the Diamond Celebration at “The Happiest Place on Earth,” andend insert declare June 1, 2015, as Disneyland Day.

P1    1WHEREAS, When Walt Disney formally dedicated Disneyland
2on July 17, 1955, he stated that he envisioned the park would be
3“... a source of joy and inspiration to all the world”; and

4WHEREAS, The success of Walt Disney’s dream has launched
5an industry and sparked an empire of fun that now spans thebegin delete globe,end delete
6begin insert world,end insert attracting approximately 25 million visitors to Anaheim,
7California, every year and growing; and

8WHEREAS, Disneyland Resort has become an American icon
9that has been successfully exported from Anaheim, California to
10Disney theme parks in Orlando, Florida; Tokyo, Japan; Paris,
P2    1France; Hong Kong, China; and the soon-to-be-opened park in
2Shanghai, China; and

3WHEREAS, Walt Disney’s original venture in Anaheim,
4California, has expanded from a single theme park with one hotel
5into a full-scale resort with two world-class theme parks,
6approximately 2,500 hotel rooms, 150 restaurants, and 85 retail
7locations; and

8WHEREAS, Since 1955, Disneyland Resort has become
9California’s number one tourist resort destination and its theme
10parks are amongst two of the top 10 most visited theme parks in
11the world; and

12WHEREAS, Walt Disney opened Disneyland with 1,280 cast
13members in 1955 and today the resort has grown to become the
14largest employer in Orange County and one of the largest single
15site employers in California, directly employing 28,000 cast
16members; and

17WHEREAS, The Disneyland Resort generates an economic
18impact of approximately $5 billion annually to the southern
19California economy; and

20WHEREAS, Environmental conservation efforts by the
21Disneyland Resort have been recognized by the state and the
22nation, winning a 2009 and 2014 Governor’s Environmental and
23Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) and a 2014 Food Recovery
24Challenge Award by the United States Environmental Protection
25Agency; and

26WHEREAS, In the spirit of Walt Disney, the Disneyland Resort
27and its cast members annually provide nearly $17 million in cash,
28in-kind gifts, and volunteer services to hundreds of nonprofit
29groups, touching the lives of thousands of residents; and

30WHEREAS, The creation of Disneyland was, perhaps, the single
31greatest family entertainment achievement of the 20th
32century--introducing an entirely new concept in outdoor
33entertainment and establishing an icon of fun and magic known
34around the world that continues well into the 21st century;begin delete andend delete
