Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 72—Relative to Teacher Appreciation Month.

SCR 72, as amended, Gaines. Teacher Appreciation Month.

This measure would designate the month of May 2015 as Teacher Appreciation Month, recognize teachers for the significant role they play, and encourage pupils, parents, and public officials to publicly recognize the hard work and dedication of teachers, and to observe the month by supporting teachers through appropriate activities, events, and programs.

P1    1WHEREAS, Talented and hardworking teachers throughout
2California’s public, private, and charter schools are nurturing the
3next generation of thinkers, doers, and dreamers; and

4WHEREAS, Teachers teach the skills that will inspire the next
5century of professionals, entrepreneurs, innovators, and workers
6in critically needed technical careers and professions; and

7WHEREAS, Teachers also build character, compassion,
8creativity, and resilience among our state’s children that will
9prepare them to take on the challenges of the future; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Our best teachers are role models who show our
2kids how to work hard and pursue a brighter future, and who further
3encourage children’s passions, inspire their imaginations, and help
4them realize the best versions of themselves; and

5WHEREAS, Teaching is an all-encompassing commitment, and
6teachers make enormous sacrifices to support their pupils; and

7WHEREAS, The recent California court decision, Vergara v.
8California, stated that competent teachers are a critical, if not the
9most important, component of success of a child’s in-school
10educational experience; and

11WHEREAS, We can improve our country’s educational system
12significantly by exhibiting respect for teachers, and by letting them
13know how much we value their contributions in helping schools
14meet the needs of pupils from all communities in our state; now,
15therefore, be it

16Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
17thereof concurring,
That the Legislature designates the month of
18May 2015 as Teacher Appreciation Month; and, be it further

19Resolved, That the Legislature recognizes teachers for the
20significant role they play in our lives and in the well-being of our
21state; and, be it further

22Resolved, That the Legislature encourages pupils, parents, and
23public officials to publicly recognize the hard work and dedication
24of teachers, and to observe the month by supporting teachers
25through appropriate activities, events, and programs; and, be it
26further

27Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
28this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
