This measure would request that the Department of Parks and Recreation rename Annadel State Park in the County of Sonoma as Trione Annadel State Parkbegin insert, and, upon the receipt of donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, install new signs reflecting the name changeend insert.

P1 1WHEREAS, The Sonoma County Regional Parks Department
2serves the social, cultural, and outdoor recreational needs of the
3people of Sonoma County through the operation and maintenance
4of 49 Regional Parks and Annadel State Park; and
5WHEREAS, In 1972, Henry Trione was instrumental in the
6creation of Annadel State Park by personally spending more than
7$1 million to preserve the 5,000-acre property from development;
8and
9WHEREAS, When the Department of Parks and Recreation
10placed Annadel State Park on the park closure list in 2012, Henry
11Trione made a substantial donation to help keep the park open
P2 1under the operation of the Sonoma County Regional Parks
2Department; and
3WHEREAS, Henry Trione’s support made it possible to keep
4Annadel State Park open and accessible to the public on an ongoing
5basis; and
6WHEREAS, Henry Trione also offered a substantial contribution
7that created Trione Fields at Tom Schopflin Park, which provides
8an outstanding location for children in the community to play
9soccer and softball; and
10WHEREAS, The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors
11recognized Henry Trione for his exceptional contributions to
12Annadel State Park and other local parks and bestowed upon him
13the title of “Honorary Regional Parks Ranger;” and
14WHEREAS, In 2012, the State Park and Recreation Commission
15voted to rename Eastshore State Park, an 8.5-mile stretch of the
16East Bay shoreline, as McLaughlin Eastshore State Park in honor
17of Berkeley environmentalist Sylvia McLaughlin; and
18WHEREAS, The County of Sonoma and the City of Santa Rosa
19are supportive of renaming Annadel State Park to recognize Henry
20Trione and his achievements while retaining Annadel in the park’s
21name; now, therefore, be it
22Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
23thereof concurring, That the Legislature requests that the
24Department of Parks and Recreation rename Annadel State Park
25as Trione Annadel State Park; and be it further
26WHEREAS, Annadel State Park, located in the historic Valley
27of the Moon, an area popularized by author Jack London, became
28a state park in 1971, and includes over 5,000 acres of rolling hills,
29seasonal streams, meadows, trails, and woodlands, all located
30near a major metropolitan area in Sonoma County; and
31WHEREAS, The Sonoma County Regional Parks department
32serves the social, cultural, and outdoor recreation needs of the
33people of Sonoma County through the operation and maintenance
34of 49 regional parks and has assisted the state in serving the park
35needs of citizens statewide with the operation and maintenance of
36Annadel State Park; and
37WHEREAS, Annadel State Park in Sonoma County, originally
38named the Annadel Ranch State Park, is one of the most widely
39used parks in the state parks system; and
P3 1WHEREAS, Henry Trione was a long-term resident of Sonoma
2County before his death at the age of 94 years and was a true
3“Renaissance Californian” who created a legacy across Sonoma
4County and the entire north coast region; and
5WHEREAS, Henry Trione’s most significant and enduring
6contribution to Sonoma County and the state of California is widely
7acknowledged to be the creation of Annadel State Park in a wooded
8wilderness area overlooking the Santa Rosa plain that was slated
9for residential development; and
10WHEREAS, It is widely recognized that Annadel State Park
11would not exist today were it not for the personal tenacity of Henry
12Trione and his initial personal contribution of $1 million to
13preserve the 5,000-acre property; and
14WHEREAS, Henry Trione’s actions to create Annadel State
15Park are remarkable because they occurred long before the
16importance of such public spaces closely linked to urban
17development was widely understood; and
18WHEREAS, In 2012 the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors
19recognized Henry Trione for his exceptional contributions to
20Annadel State Park and other local parks and bestowed upon him
21the title of “Honorary Regional Parks Ranger”; and
22WHEREAS, The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors and the
23Santa Rosa City Council have each voted unanimously to urge the
24State of California to similarly recognize Henry Trione and his
25achievements with respect to Annadel State Park, while retaining
26Annadel in the park’s name; now, therefore, be it
27Resolved by the Senate of the State of
28California, the Assembly thereof concurring,
29 That the Legislature requests that the Department of Parks and
30Recreation rename Annadel State Park as Trione Annadel State
31Park and, upon receipt of donations from nonstate sources
32sufficient to cover the cost, install new signs reflecting the name
33change; and be it further
34Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
35this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
