Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 86—Relative to Little Saigon.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

SCR 86, as introduced, Pan. Little Saigon.

This measure would recognize California’s Vietnamese Americans and “Little Saigon” communities.

P1    1WHEREAS, There are at least four areas in California that have
2been officially designated as “Little Saigon”; and

3WHEREAS, The oldest, largest, and most prominent “Little
4Saigon” is located in Orange County with over 189,000 Vietnamese
5American residents; and

6WHEREAS, The “Little Saigon” in San Jose is comparable to
7the “Little Saigon” in Orange County with over 180,000
8Vietnamese American residents; and

9WHEREAS, In February 2010, Sacramento officially named a
10stretch of Stockton Boulevard, from Florin Road to Fruitridge
11Road, “Little Saigon” due to the growing and thriving Vietnamese
12American population; and

13WHEREAS, San Francisco designated Larkin Street, between
14Eddy and O’Farrell Streets, “Little Saigon,” where more than
15three-quarters of the businesses on the two-block stretch are owned
16by Vietnamese Americans; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Oakland, San Diego, and communities in the San
2Gabriel Valley are seeing a large increase in their Vietnamese
3American residents; now, therefore, be it

4Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
5thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby recognizes the
6 positive contributions of Vietnamese Americans and “Little
7Saigon” communities to California’s diverse population and
8economy; and be it further

9Resolved, That the Legislature encourages the growth of these
10cultural and economic hubs that have been established through a
11rise in the Vietnamese American population and “Little Saigon”
12communities; and be it further

13Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
14this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
