Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 93—Relative to Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month.

SCR 93, as introduced, Pan. Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month.

This measure would recognize May 2016 as Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month.

P1    1WHEREAS, The earliest Asian Americans immigrated to the
2United States in the 1800s; and

3WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans have played
4a critical role in the social, economic, and political development
5of California throughout its history; and

6WHEREAS, The 5.5 million Asian and Pacific Islander
7Americans in California are one of the fastest growing ethnic
8populations in the state; and

9WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans represent
10over 15.5 percent of California’s population and represent
11ancestries that include, but are not limited to, Asian Indian,
12Bangladeshi, Bhutanese, Burmese, Cambodian, Chamorro,
13Chinese, Taiwanese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Iu-Mien, Iwo
14Jiman, Guamanian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Malaysian,
15Maldivian, Mongolian, Nepalese, Native Hawaiian, Vietnamese,
16Okinawan, Pakistani, Samoan, Singaporean, Sri Lankan, Thai,
17Tongan, and other Pacific Islander; and

P2    1WHEREAS, The California Commission on Asian and Pacific
2Islander American Affairs was established in 2004 and is charged
3with advising the Governor, the Legislature, and state agencies on
4issues relating to the social and economic development, rights,
5and interests of the Asian and Pacific Islander American
6communities; and

7WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander American entrepreneurs
8have led many of California’s businesses to the pinnacle of their
9respective industries; and

10WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander American communities
11throughout California actively promote their cultural heritage and
12promote cross-cultural understanding; and

13WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans will continue
14to be an important part of California’s diverse tapestry of cultures
15and ideas; and

16WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans have
17contributed greatly to California’s economic success, rural growth,
18and urban development; and

19WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans continue to
20cultivate and advance the fields of the arts and humanities,
21business, education, information technology, law, public safety,
22science, sports, and the environment; and

23WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander American refugees have
24revitalized many of California’s communities, while bringing in
25new ideas and economic opportunities; and

26WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander American immigrants
27and refugees had to overcome tremendous odds and cultural
28barriers to establish a better life for their families; and

29WHEREAS, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans have a proud
30legacy of service and dedication to the state and to the United
31States; now, therefore, be it

32Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
33thereof concurring,
That the Legislature commends Asian and
34Pacific Islander Americans for their notable accomplishments and
35outstanding service to the state, and recognizes the month of May
362016 as Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month; and
37be it further

P3    1Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
2this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
