Senate Resolution No. 55—Relative to Drug Facts Week.

P1    1WHEREAS, National Drug Facts Week is sponsored by the
2National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes
3of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
4in accordance with other federal and private partner organizations
5to encourage teens to ask questions about drugs and drug abuse
6and receive scientifically based facts and answers in return; and

7WHEREAS, National Drug Facts Week is a celebration of the
8developing minds of teenagers and encourages them to ask
9 questions about drugs and drug abuse and get scientifically based
10answers, without judgment or biased comment; and

11WHEREAS, The National Institute on Drug Abuse stimulates
12most of the world’s research on drug abuse and addiction and can
13offer science as a key element of the national and community
14conversation about drugs; and

15WHEREAS, National Drug Facts Week celebrates the efforts
16of national and community organizations working with teens to
17encourage this science based conversation about drugs and drug
18abuse; and

19WHEREAS, Research shows that children whose parents talk
20to them about alcohol and other drugs are 50 percent less likely to
21use them than kids who do not have these important conversations
22at home; and

23WHEREAS, The State of California recognizes the importance
24of securing a safe and healthy future for our children and seeks to
25do so through education and awareness; now, therefore, be it

P2    1Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
2recognizes the week of January 25 through January 31 as Drug
3Facts Week; and be it further

4Resolved, that the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this
5resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
