Author: McGuire (D), Bates (R), and Nguyen (R)
          Introduced:2/19/16

           SUBJECT: Stomach Cancer Awareness Month

          SOURCE: Author

DIGEST: This resolution designates the month of November 2016
as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California.
ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative
          findings:

1)Stomach cancer is among the cancers with the lowest five-year
survival rate (29%), and the mortality rates have remained
relatively unchanged over the past 30 years.

2)Since 1977, stomach cancer has increased by 70% in persons
between 25 and 39 years of age.

3)It is estimated that more than 72,000 people in the United
States are currently living with stomach cancer.

4)In 2014, $1.8 billion was spent on care of stomach cancer
patients in the United States; and the National Cancer
Institute invested only $11.2 million to fund stomach cancer
            research in 2013.

                                                                    Page 2

5)Early detection is the key to surviving stomach cancer; and
better patient and health care provider education is needed
for the timely recognition of stomach cancer risks and
            symptoms.

This resolution designates the month of November 2016 as Stomach
Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California; and the
people of this state and interested groups are encouraged to
observe and support November 2016 as "Stomach Cancer Awareness
Month" through appropriate programs and activities to promote
public awareness of, and potential treatments for, stomach
          cancer.
