P1 1WHEREAS, More than five million people worldwide suffer
2from the devastating effects of systematic lupus erythematosus,
3commonly known as lupus, and each year another 100,000 young
4women, men, and children will be diagnosed with this disease;
5and
6WHEREAS, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes
7inflammation of various parts of the body, particularly the skin,
8joints, heart, and kidneys; and
9WHEREAS, Lupus research shows that close to two million
10Americans have been diagnosed with lupus, affecting one out of
11every 185 people and striking adult women about 9 out of 10 times
12more than adult men; and
13WHEREAS, While lupus is not infectious, rare, or cancerous,
14it affects more people than cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle
15cell anemia, and cystic fibrosis combined; and
16WHEREAS, Although lupus ranges from mild to life-threatening
17and thousands of Americans who have lupus die each year, the
18majority of cases can be controlled with proper treatment; and
19WHEREAS, There is a deep, unmet need worldwide to educate
20and support individuals and families affected by lupus; and
21WHEREAS, The Lupus Foundation of Southern California in
22San Diego, the Lupus Foundation of Northern California in San
23Jose, and Lupus LA in Los Angeles were founded as 501(c)(3)
24nonprofit organizations to alleviate suffering for lupus patients
25through patient and family services, achieve early detection of
P2 1undiagnosed cases through awareness promotion, and achieve the
2eradication of lupus by supporting lupus research; and
3WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and proper treatment are critical
4to the improvement of the quality of life and survival rate of lupus
5sufferers; and
6WHEREAS, Increased public awareness, education, and research
7are key to winning the battle against lupus; now, therefore, be it
8Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
9designates the month of May 2016 as Lupus Awareness Month
10and extends heartfelt wishes to the Lupus Foundation of Southern
11California in San Diego, the Lupus Foundation of Northern
12California in San Jose, and Lupus LA in Los Angeles for success
13in their core objectives in the future; and be it further
14Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
15this resolution to the Lupus Foundation of Southern California in
16San Diego, Lupus LA in Los Angeles, and the Lupus Foundation
17of Northern California in San Jose, and to the author for appropriate
18distribution.
