ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative findings: 1)Tens of millions of Americans are affected by urological diseases and conditions, including urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, underactive bladder, interstitial cystitis, nocturia, urinary tract infections, bladder cancer, urotrauma, and neurogenic bladder. 2)Urological diseases and conditions have significant impact on health and quality of life-contributing to depression, social isolation, falls, sexual dysfunction, loss of self-esteem, hospitalizations, nursing home admissions, and even death. 3)Medical and behavioral research to better understand and maintain bladder health and treat bladder diseases is critically needed, yet poorly recognized. 4)Bladder problems are highly stigmatized, and open dialogue generated by Urological Health Month can reduce stigma and empower providers and patients to have much needed SR 70 Page 2 conversations about bladder health. This resolution designates the month of November 2016 as Urological Health Month. FISCAL EFFECT: Appropriation: No Fiscal Com.:NoLocal: No SUPPORT: (Verified3/29/16) California Urological Association (source) OPPOSITION: (Verified3/29/16) None received ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT: According to the California Urological Association: Urology is a surgical specialty dealing with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Urology combines the management of medical (i.e., non-surgical) conditions such as urinary tract infections and benign prostatic hyperplasia, with the management of surgical conditions such as bladder or prostate cancer, kidney stones, congenital abnormalities, traumatic injury and stress incontinence. Our members are on the front-lines treating and educating patients on these and other conditions which have significant SR 70 Page 3 impact on health and quality of life - contributing to depression, social isolation, falls, sexual dysfunction, loss of self-esteem, hospitalizations, nursing home admissions, and even death. Clearly more can be done to empower providers and patients to have much-needed conversations about urological health. We therefore believe a general awareness campaign for diseases and conditions this extensive and expensive are a step in the right direction and promote good common medical, societal and public health practice.
