P1 1WHEREAS, The economic competitiveness of California in the
2economy requires a well-educated workforce; and
3WHEREAS, Higher education is more important than ever
4because it is an essential step to entering and remaining in the
5middle class; and
6WHEREAS, Because of the importance of higher education,
7California should expand the opportunity to pursue and attain
8higher education degrees to more people than have had that
9opportunity in the past; and
10WHEREAS, Public investment in higher education pays off, as
11evidenced by the fact that workers with college degrees earn more
12money, pay more taxes, and rely less on government services; and
13WHEREAS, Students who experience higher education gain
14respect, networking skills, and insight into cutting-edge technology
15and are challenged to be more innovative; and
16WHEREAS, Encouraging students of all ages to pursue
17educational goals at all levels will prepare the next generation of
18college students to be the driving force of California’s future
19economy; and
20WHEREAS, California has lagged behind other states in college
21attendance and graduation; and
22WHEREAS, Attending college and graduating with an advanced
23degree builds self-esteem, communication skills, discipline, and
24perseverance. These qualities make a positive and significant
25difference in a person’s life and in his or her level of
26accomplishments; and
P2 1WHEREAS, By an act of the registrar at National Day Calendar,
2June 6 was declared National Higher Education Day; now,
3therefore, be it
4Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
5recognizes California’s students, civic leaders, community
6members, school administrators, colleges, and universities for their
7important contribution in promoting the value of higher education
8and therefore recognizes the month of June 2016 as Higher
9Education Month; and be it further
10Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
11this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
