P1 1WHEREAS, In 2015, 813 pedestrians were killed on California
2roadways; and
3WHEREAS, Between 2006 and 2015, 6,939 people died in
4pedestrian-related traffic incidents in California; and
5WHEREAS, Pedestrian fatalities account for nearly 25 percent
6of all roadway deaths in California; and
7WHEREAS, No state has more pedestrian deaths on its roadways
8than California; and
9WHEREAS, Californians are encouraged to practice safe
10pedestrian and driving behaviors in order to reduce
11pedestrian-related injuries and fatalities; and
12WHEREAS, Pedestrians and motorists should continue to be
13reminded about their role in ensuring the safety of all who use
14California’s roadways; and
15WHEREAS, Californians are encouraged to support activities
16associated with pedestrian safety; and
17WHEREAS, Walking provides positive mental and physical
18health benefits to the pedestrian, increases personal mobility
19options, potentially lessens air pollution and vehicular congestion,
20and increases community livability; and
21WHEREAS, The Transportation Agency, Office of Traffic
22Safety, Department of the California Highway Patrol, Department
23of Transportation, and Department of Motor Vehicles are joined
24in the commitment to educate the public on pedestrian safety issues
25and bring an eventual end to pedestrian deaths and injuries; and
P2 1WHEREAS, California recognizes the need to achieve greater
2mobility, safety, and sustainability in its travel and transportation
3objectives; now, therefore, be it
4Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate
5recognizes the month of September 2016, and every September
6thereafter, as California Pedestrian Safety Month. The people of
7California and its visitors are encouraged to help reduce
8pedestrian-related injuries and the tragic loss of lives by practicing
9safe walking and driving behaviors during California Pedestrian
10Safety Month and every month throughout the year; and be it
11further
12Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
13this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
