Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 101—Relative to California Girls and Women in Sports Week.

SCR 101, as introduced, Fuller. California Girls and Women in Sports Week.

This measure would recognize female athletes, coaches, officials, and sports administrators for their important contributions in promoting the value of sports in the achievement of full human potential and would proclaim February 1 to 7, 2016, inclusive, as California Girls and Women in Sports Week.

P1    1WHEREAS, By an act of the United States Congress, February
24, 1987, was proclaimed as the first National Girls and Women in
3Sports Day in honor of Flo Hyman, a volleyball legend whose
4efforts to promote equality in sports were cut short by her untimely
5and tragic death; and

6WHEREAS, Since that time, women have made considerable
7advances in professional, collegiate, club, intramural, masters,
8high school, junior high school, youth, and recreational sports; and

9WHEREAS, Many female athletes have distinguished
10themselves as representatives of California and the nation in
11international competition and the Olympic games; and

12WHEREAS, Participation in sports is acknowledged as a positive
13force in developing and promoting physical, mental, moral, social,
14and emotional well-being; and it is well established that
P2    1participation in athletics builds self-esteem, communication skills,
2discipline, and perseverance, all qualities that make a positive and
3significant difference in the quality of life and in the level of
4accomplishment; and

5WHEREAS, We need to encourage women of all ages to
6compete and contribute to sports at all levels of competition and
7recreation to help prepare the next generation of female athletes
8and sports leaders; and

9WHEREAS, The combined efforts of many organizations
10including the Women’s Sports Foundation, the California
11Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance,
12and the California National Organization for Women, have served
13to bring needed information and important recognition of this day,
14as well as furthered the dreams and inspired today’s female
15athletes; now, therefore, be it

16Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
17thereof concurring,
That the Legislature recognizes female athletes,
18coaches, officials, and sports administrators for their important
19contributions in promoting the value of sports in the achievement
20of full human potential and hereby proclaims February 1 to 7,
212016, inclusive, as California Girls and Women in Sports Week;
22and be it further

23Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
24this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
