This measure would recognize March 2, 2016, as Read Across America Day and would call upon all Californians to observe this day by participating in appropriate ceremonies and activities.

P1 1WHEREAS, Reading is the building block to learning and the
2foundation for future success; and
3WHEREAS, Reading is a source of pleasure throughout life;
4and
5WHEREAS, In 1998, the National Education Association
6celebrated the Read Across America campaign to raise awareness
7about the importance of reading; and
8WHEREAS, The California Teachers Association celebrates
9Read Across America and the positive impact it has made in the
10schools and the State of California; and
11WHEREAS, Read Across America is a national celebration of
12reading that promotes literacy, reading, and adult involvement in
13the education of pupils, and is celebrated on March 2 in honor of
14Dr. Seuss’s birthday; and
15WHEREAS, To celebrate the joy of reading, pupils, parents,
16teachers, sports figures, celebrities, firefighters, and business and
P2 1community leaders are taking part in Read Across America events
2throughout the nation; and
3WHEREAS, On March 2, 2016, the National Education
4Association, the California Teachers Association, local schools,
5libraries, bookstores, businesses, and other community
6organizations will commemorate Read Across America Day; now,
7therefore, be it
8Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
9thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes March 2, 2016,
10as Read Across America Day, and calls upon all Californians to
11observe this day by participating in appropriate ceremonies and
12activities; and be it further
13Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
14this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
