This measure would designate Monday, May 2, 2016, as California Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, and would urge all Californians to honor those individuals who have given their lives for our safety and express appreciation to those who continue to dedicate themselves to making California a safer place in which to live and raise our families.

P1 1WHEREAS, Monday, May 2, 2016, is California Peace Officers’
2Memorial Day, a day Californians observe in commemoration of
3those noble officers who have tragically sacrificed their lives in
4the line of duty; and
5WHEREAS, Although California citizens are indebted to our
6California peace officers each day of the week, we make particular
7note of their bravery and dedication and we share in their losses
8on California Peace Officers’ Memorial Day; and
P2 1WHEREAS, California peace officers have a job second in
2importance to none, and it is a job that is as difficult and dangerous
3as it is important; and
4WHEREAS, The peace officers of California have worked
5dutifully and selflessly on behalf of the people of this great state,
6regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves; and
7WHEREAS, By the enforcement of our laws, these same officers
8have safeguarded the lives and property of the citizens of California
9and have given their full measure to ensure these citizens the right
10to be free from crime and violence; and
11WHEREAS, Special ceremonies and observations on behalf of
12California peace officers provide all Californians with the
13opportunity to appreciate the heroic men and women who have
14dedicated their lives to preserving public safety; now, therefore,
15be it
16Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
17thereof concurring, That the Legislature recognizes California’s
18peace officers who were killed in defense of their communities in
192015:
20Officer Michael J. Johnson, San Jose Police Department, End
21of Watch: March 24, 2015.
22Officer David J. Nelson, Bakersfield Police Department, End of
23Watch: June 26, 2015.
24Sergeant Scott P. Lunger, Hayward Police Department, End of
25Watch: July 22, 2015.
26Officer Bryce E. Hanes, San Bernardino Police Department, End
27of Watch: November 5, 2015; and be it further
28Resolved, That the Legislature also recognizes California’s peace
29officers who were killed in defense of their communities in prior
30years, but not yet enrolled:
31Officer William H. Waggoner, Long Beach Police Department,
32End of Watch: December 18, 1954; and be it further
33Resolved, That the Legislature designates Monday, May 2, 2016,
34as California Peace Officers’ Memorial Day, and urges all
35Californians to remember those individuals who have given their
36lives for our safety and express appreciation to those who continue
37to dedicate themselves to making California a safer place in which
38to live and raise our families; and be it further
