P1 1WHEREAS, An estimated 40 million Americans have some
2type of communication and swallowing disorder, costing the United
3States approximately $154 to $186 billion annually due to lost
4work productivity, special education, and medical treatment; and
5WHEREAS, Those citizens of California who have overcome
6their communication and swallowing disabilities through the
7services of dedicated audiologists and speech-language pathologists
8should be recognized; and
9WHEREAS, California also recognizes and values the efforts
10of all audiologists and speech-language pathologists throughout
11our nation who work to help these individuals with communication
12and swallowing disorders to lead independent, productive, and
13fulfilling lives; and
14WHEREAS, California is proud and honored to have
15audiologists and speech-language pathologists offering quality
16education and health care services to its citizens; and
P2 1WHEREAS, audiologists and speech-language pathologists in
2California annually observe and celebrate Better Hearing and
3Speech Month during the month of May; now, therefore, be it
4Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
5thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaims the month of
6May 2016 as Better Hearing and Speech Month and encourages
7all citizens to recognize the achievements of audiologists and
8speech-language pathologists in improving the quality of life for
9people with communication and swallowing disorders; and be it
10further
11Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
12this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
