          DIGEST:   This resolution designates an interchange on State  
          Highway 101 in the City of Petaluma as the Police Officer Vilho  
          Ahola Memorial Interchange.
          
          ANALYSIS:   This resolution designates an interchange on State  
          Highway 101 in the County of Sonoma, known as the "Old Redwood  
          Highway Interchange," located at the north end of the City of  
          Petaluma, as the Police Officer Vilho Ahola Memorial  
          Interchange.  The Department of Transportation is requested to  
          determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs and, upon  
          receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to  
          erect those signs.
          
          Comments

          1)Purpose.  The author introduced this resolution to honor the  
            life and service of Officer Vilho Ahola.

          2)Background on Officer Ahola.  Mr. Ahola served in the United

            States Air Force before working for the Scituate Police  
            Department in Massachusetts.  He moved to California in 1961  
            and joined the Petaluma Police Department where he helped  
            organize the Police Athletic League, teaching rifle  
            marksmanship and firearms safety.  Officer Ahola was qualified  
            for the Massachusetts and California state championship rifle  
            teams and the United States Olympic rifle marksmanship team.

            On November 7, 1969, Officer Ahola was shot while responding  
            to a domestic disturbance, rendering him quadriplegic.  After  
            a lifetime of complications, he passed away on February 1,  
            1998.  Officer Ahola is survived by his wife and two sons.
