This measure would designate a specified portion of State Highway Route 50 from Mount Ralston Road to Echo Summit as the Firefighter Michaelbegin delete “Mickey”end deletebegin insert “Mikeyend insertbegin insertend insert Hallenbeck Memorial Highway. The measure would also request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.

P1    1WHEREAS, In 2015, Michael “Mikey” Hallenbeck, a resident
2of Shingle Springs, California, was in his first year as a firefighter
3working as a member of Organized Crew 36 of the Lake Tahoe
4Basin Management Unit of the United States Forest Service, which
5is responsible for 191,000 acres of national forest lands; and

6WHEREAS, Prior to becoming a firefighter, Michael had been
7employed as a ski lift operator in the Lake Tahoe area; and

8WHEREAS, In early August 2015, the Sierra Fire started in the
9jurisdiction of Michael’s firefighting unit; and

P2    1WHEREAS, Michael was struck by a falling tree while fighting
2to control the blaze; and

3WHEREAS, Michael, 21, later succumbed to the injuries he
4tragically sustained while combating the Sierra Fire; and

5WHEREAS, Michael’s sacrifice serves as a reminder of the
6heroic work done by men and women, like Michael, who put
7themselves in danger, and of the importance of continuing to learn
8from these misfortunes and adjusting safety measures during the
9arduous wildfire season; and

10WHEREAS, It is appropriate to commemorate Firefighter
11Michael “Mikey” Hallenbeck’s service and ultimate sacrifice, and
12to designate a portion of State Highway Route 50 in El Dorado
13County in his honor; now,begin delete thereforeend deletebegin insert therefore,end insert be it

14Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
15thereof concurring,
That the Legislature hereby designates the
16portion of State Highway Route 50 from the intersection with
17Mount Ralston Road (post mile R61.845) to Echo Summit (post
18mile R66.483) in the County of El Dorado as the Firefighter
19Michaelbegin delete “Mickey”end deletebegin insert “Mikeyend insertbegin insertend insert Hallenbeck Memorial Highway; and
20be it further

21Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested
22to determine the costs of erecting appropriate signs including this
23special designation, consistent with the signing requirements for
24the state highway system, and, upon receiving donations from
25nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs; and be it
26further

27Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of
28this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author
29for appropriate distribution.
