          SENATE VOTE:  37-0


          SUBJECT:  Firefighter Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck Memorial  
          Highway


          SUMMARY:  Designates a portion of State Highway Route 50 (SR 50)  
          in El Dorado County as the "Firefighter Michael "Mikey"  
          Hallenbeck Memorial Highway."  Specifically, this resolution:  


          1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of Michael "Mikey"  
            Hallenbeck, a firefighter in the United States Forest Service.


          2)Designates the portion of SR 50 between post mile R 61.845 at  
            Mount Ralston Road and post mile R 66.483 at Echo Summit in El  
            Dorado County as the "Firefighter Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck  
            Memorial Highway."


          3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation  
            (Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent  
            with the signing requirements for the state highway system,  
            showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations

            from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those  
            signs.


          EXISTING LAW:  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways.  This includes the installation  
          and maintenance of highway signs.


          FISCAL EFFECT:  Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans  
          only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from  
          non-state sources covering the cost.


          COMMENTS:  Michael "Mikey" Hallenbeck, a resident of Shingle  
          Springs, served as a firefighter in Organized Crew 36 of the  
          Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the United States Forest  
          Service.  Prior to becoming a firefighter, Hallenbeck was a ski  
          lift operator in the Lake Tahoe area.  While fighting to control  
          the Sierra Fire in August 2015, in his first year as a  
          firefighter, Hallenbeck was struck by a falling tree and  
          succumbed to his injuries at the age of 21.  This resolution  
          designating a portion of SR 50 in El Dorado County in his honor  
          acknowledges the significant role Mikey Hallenbeck played in his  
          community.
