          SCR
          151 (Gaines) - As Amended August 19, 2016

          SENATE VOTE: 37-0

SUBJECT: Deputy Sheriff Michael D. Davis, Jr. Memorial Highway

SUMMARY: Designates a portion of Interstate Highway 80 (I-80)
in Placer County as the "Deputy Sheriff Michael D. Davis, Jr.
          Memorial Highway." Specifically, this resolution:

1)Recounts the life and accomplishments of Michael David Davis,
Jr., a deputy sheriff in the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

2)Designates the portion of I-80 at the Horseshoe Bar Road
Interchange in Placer County as the "Deputy Sheriff Michael D.
            Davis, Jr. Memorial Highway."

3)Requests that the California Department of Transportation
(Caltrans) determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent
with the signing requirements for the state highway system,
showing the special designation and, upon receiving donations
from non-state sources covering that cost, to erect those
            signs.

EXISTING LAW: Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation
          and maintenance of highway signs.

                                                                    SCR 151

                                                                    Page 2

FISCAL EFFECT: Unknown, but the measure requests that Caltrans
only erect the appropriate signage upon receiving donations from
          non-state sources covering the cost.

COMMENTS: Michael D. Davis, Jr. joined the Placer County
Sheriff's Office in 1999 after previously serving in the Auburn
Police Department. Deputy Sheriff Davis is remembered for his
role coaching baseball in the Woodcreek Little League and his
devotion to his family. Deputy Sheriff Davis was killed in the
line of duty on October 24, 2014. He is survived by his wife,
his four children and step-children, his mother, and his
grandparents. This resolution designating a portion of I-80 in
Placer County in his honor acknowledges the significant role
Deputy Sheriff Davis played in his community.

Proposed author's amendment: The author proposes to make an
amendment clarifying the designation of the specified structure
shall be the "Deputy Sheriff Michael D. Davis, Jr. Memorial
          Interchange."
