This measure would proclaim the month of June 2016 to be Dairy Month in California and would encourage Californians to continue to support the American dairy industry by including dairy products as part of a healthy diet.

P1 1WHEREAS, The annual tradition of National June Dairy Month,
2originally known as National Milk Month, began in 1937 and is
3an opportunity for Americans to honor dairy farmers, acknowledge
4dairy farmers’ contributions to the economy, and recognize the
5importance of dairy products to a healthy diet for many Americans;
6and
7WHEREAS, California is America’s number one milk-producing
8state, the number two cheese-producing state, and dairy is the
9state's number one agricultural commodity; and
10WHEREAS, Ninety-nine percent of California dairy farms are
11family owned, and dairy farming in California has a 200-year
12heritage; and
P2 1WHEREAS, One hundred eighty-nine thousand jobs depend on
2California’s dairy industry, including 55,000 milk production and
3processing jobs; and
4WHEREAS, The landscape, economy, health, and nutrition of
5California would not be the same without our dairy farms and the
6approximately 1,450 families who run them; and
7WHEREAS, Twenty-five percent of Americans do not meet
8their recommended intake of calcium; and
9WHEREAS, The Office of the Surgeon General predicts that
10by 2020, one-half of all Americans older than 50 years of age will
11be at risk for fractures as a result of osteoporosis and low bone
12density, and one in five people with a hip fracture dies within a
13year of their injury; and
14WHEREAS, The United States Surgeon General’s 2015 report
15on bone health and osteoporosis reveals that people can improve
16bone health and prevent fractures by boosting calcium and vitamin
17D intake; and
18WHEREAS, Dairy foods provide essential nutrients, including
19calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin A, and milk is the
20number one source of calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and vitamin
21D in the American diet; and
22WHEREAS, Obesity has more than doubled in children and
23quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years, and more than
24one-third of adults are considered to be obese; and
25WHEREAS, Consumption of dairy foods plays a beneficial role
26in maintaining a healthy weight, according to the Centers for
27Disease Control and Prevention; and
28WHEREAS, Dairy farming is a leading agricultural commodity
29in California, producing $7.6 billion in annual retail sales in 2014;
30now, therefore, be it
31Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly
32thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims the
33month of June 2016 to be Dairy Month in California in honor of
34the work of dairy producers in California and encourages all
35Californians to continue to support the American dairy industry
36by including dairy products as part of a healthy diet; and be it
37further

2this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
