LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST AJR 96, as amended, Martinez. The {- Gabrielino-Tongva Nation -} {+ Gabrielinos +} . This measure would {- (1) -} recognize the {- Gabrielino-Tongva Nation -} {+ Gabrielinos +} as the aboriginal tribe of the Los Angeles Basin and {- the elected tribal council of the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation as the legal and traditional governing body of the Gabrielino-Tongva Indian people and (2) -} {+ would +} memorialize the President and Congress to give similar recognition to the {- Gabrielino-Tongva Nation and its elected tribal council -} {+ Gabrielinos +} . WHEREAS, {- Gabrielino-Tongva -} {+ Gabrielino +} tribal territory encompasses the entire Los Angeles Basin area and the Channel Islands of Santa Catalina, San Nicholas, {- San Clemente, and Santa Barbara. Their land runs from Topanga in the west, to Laguna in the south, and to the base of the San Bernardino Mountains in the east; and -} {+ and San Clemente; and +} WHEREAS, The {- Gabrielino-Tongva -} {+ Gabrielino +} were, at one time, one of the most prosperous and generous Native American tribes of southern California. Long before European contact, the {- Tongvas -} {+ Gabrielinos +} already had a major society in place with a government, laws, religion, music, dance, art, a monetary system, and cultural exchange; and WHEREAS, The State of California has had consistent interaction with the {- Gabrielino-Tongva Nation -} {+ Gabrielinos +} , known originally as the San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians; and WHEREAS, The State of California recognizes that the {- Gabrielino-Tongva -} {+ Gabrielino +} Indian community existed and has continued to exist without interruption to the present day; and WHEREAS, The State of California recognizes that the {- Gabrielino-Tongva Nation has -} {+ Gabrielinos have +} held general membership meetings in the San Gabriel, California region for over 100 years; and {- WHEREAS, The State of California recognizes that the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation consists of approximately 1,500 to 3,000 members with an active membership of over 250 individuals who participate consistently in tribal affairs; -} {+ WHEREAS, The State of California recognizes that Gabrielino members participate consistently in tribal affairs; +} now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly and Senate of the State of California, jointly, That the State of California recognizes the {- Gabrielino-Tongva Nation -} {+ Gabrielinos +} as the aboriginal tribe of the Los Angeles Basin and takes great pride in recognizing the Indian inhabitance of the Los Angeles Basin and the continued existence of the Indian community within our state; and be it further {- Resolved, That the State of California, recognizes the elected tribal council of the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation as the legal and traditional governing body of the Gabrielino-Tongva Indian people; and be it further -} Resolved, That the California Legislature respectfully memorializes the President and Congress of the United {- State to likewise give recognition to the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation as the aboriginal tribe of the Los Angeles Basin and to the elected tribal council of the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation as the legal and traditional governing body of the Gabrielino-Tongva Indian people; -} {+ States to likewise give recognition to the Gabrielinos as the aboriginal tribe of the Los Angeles Basin; +} and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the President and Vice President of the United States, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to each Senator and Representative from California in the Congress of the {- United States, and to the elected tribal council of the Gabrielino-Tongva Nation. -} {+ United States. +}
