HOUSE OR SENATE RESOLUTIONS DO NOT CONTAIN A DIGEST WHEREAS, The Honorable Tom Woods is drawing to a close his tenure with the California State Assembly following four years of exemplary service, and it is appropriate at this time to highlight the many achievements of his illustrious tenure and to extend to him the highest commendations; and WHEREAS, Elected to the Assembly in 1994 and re-elected in 1996, Assembly Member Woods represents the 2nd Assembly District, a vast rural district that stretches from just north of Sacramento to the Oregon border, and includes the mountain and valley counties of Colusa, Glenn, Shasta, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, and Trinity, as well as portions of Butte and Yolo Counties; and WHEREAS, Prior to his election, Assembly Member Woods was involved in many Shasta County community activities, serving as a Shasta County Delegate to the Attorney General's Commission on Drugs and Youth, the President's Congressional Task Force on National and International Affairs, the Board of Directors of the Forest Museum, and the Board of Directors of Shasta Bible College, and he also headed the City-County Government Committee as President of the Shasta County Grand Jury; and WHEREAS, A native of North Carolina, Tom Woods started a broadcasting career at the age of 17, which brought him to California in 1970; and WHEREAS, He moved to Redding in 1980 and served as Operations Manager for Radio Station KVIP from 1985 until he moved to the position of General Manager in 1987, and he served in that capacity until his election to the Assembly; and WHEREAS, Assembly Member Woods is the Republican Whip in the Assembly, has served as Vice Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, and currently serves as a member of the Assembly Committees on Health, on Water, Parks & Wildlife, and on Information Technology; and WHEREAS, His legislative focus this year has been in the areas of agriculture, water, timber, and small business, and he has taken the lead on reform of the California Environmental Quality Act and flood protection by introducing legislation to allow Californians to maintain and repair levees without having to go through bureaucratic hoops that delay actions that save lives and property; and WHEREAS, Assembly Member Woods received numerous awards in his first term in the Assembly, including Legislator of the Year from the California Women in Timber, the California Association of Health Services at Home, and the Biomass Energy Alliance, and he received perfect scores from both the California Farm Bureau and the California Chamber of Commerce for his legislative voting record; and WHEREAS, Assembly Member Woods and his wife, Alice, are the proud parents of five children, Melissa, Kristin, Chad, John, and Joseph; and WHEREAS, Through his public service activities he has made a significant impact on the people of the 2nd Assembly District and throughout the state, and he will be very much missed by those individuals with whom he has been associated; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That they express their commendations and appreciation to their colleague, the Honorable Tom Woods, for his outstanding record of dedicated service to his constituents and to all of the people of California, and convey to him best wishes for every success in his future endeavors.
