          BILL SUMMARY:

AB 1717 requires the Attorney General (AG) to conduct a
study to determine the feasibility and potential benefits
to law enforcement of utilizing a statewide ballistics
identification systems, as specified, and report to the
Legislature by June 1, 2001. If the study finds that a
statewide system is feasible and beneficial, the report
shall recommend a strategy for implementation.

          STAFF COMMENTS:

Staff of the AG's office estimate increased costs of about
          $51,000 one-time for the study.

To the extent that the report recommends a strategy for
implementation and a statewide system is subsequently
implemented, costs are unknown, but potentially
          significant.
