   An act relating to public schools.


	LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


   AB 756, as introduced, Goldberg.   Instructional materials: use of
technology.
   Existing law requires the State Board of Education to adopt at
least 5 separate basic instructional materials, as defined, for use
in kindergarten and each of grades 1 to 8, inclusive, in language
arts, mathematics, science, social science, bilingual or bicultural
subjects, and any other subject, discipline or interdisciplinary
areas for which the state board determines the adoption of
instructional materials to be necessary or desirable.
   Existing law requires the governing board of a school district
maintaining one or more high schools to adopt textbooks for use in
the high schools and authorizes only textbooks of publishers who
comply with certain requirements to be adopted.
   Existing law required the State Board of Education by Education by
July 1, 2004, to adopt maximum weight standards for textbooks, as
specified.
   This bill would declare the intent of the Legislature to enact
legislation that would facilitate and enhance pupil learning by
enabling the State Board of Education and school districts to adopt
instructional materials that make use of technology and multimedia
materials to supplement and reduce the cost and size of conventional
textbooks.
   Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no.
State-mandated local program: no.


THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:


  SECTION 1.  It is the intent of the Legislature to enact
legislation that would facilitate and enhance pupil learning by
enabling the State Board of Education and school districts to adopt
instructional materials that make use of technology and multimedia
materials to supplement and reduce the cost and size of conventional
textbooks.
