SUMMARY : Designates a segment of State Route (SR) 15 as the
Deputy Kent Hintergardt Memorial Highway. Specifically, this
bill :
1)Recounts the life and career of Kent Hintergardt, a deputy with
the Riverside County Sheriff's Department who was shot and
killed in the line of duty.
2)Designates the segment of SR 15 from the SR 215 interchange to
the South 79 Exit at SR 79 in Temecula as the Deputy Kent
Hintergardt Memorial Highway.
3)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to
determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the
signing requirements for the state highway system showing this
special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate
sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.
EXISTING LAW assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating and
maintaining state highways. This includes the installation and
maintenance of highway signs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown
COMMENTS : Deputy Hintergardt fulfilled a childhood dream when,
in 1989, he joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
His first assignment was in the Los Angeles County Central Jail

until he joined the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in 1991
and was assigned to the Lake Elsinore Station.
Deputy Hintergardt was subsequently reassigned to the Southwest
Station and served in the City of Temecula the last few months
before his untimely death. As related by the author, he was
"tragically murdered on Mothers Day 1993, while responding to a
domestic violence call in Temecula. Deputy Hintergardt
confronted the suspect in a parking lot who had just murdered his
own girlfriend. Deputy Hintergardt was the first Police Officer
in Temecula to be killed in the line of duty. Kent was 33 years
and left behind a pregnant widow and a one-year old daughter.
Naming a portion of Interstate 15 after the fallen Deputy
Hintergardt is a small, but important step in honoring his
memory."
