                 ACR 36 (Conway) - As Introduced:  February 25, 2009
           
          SUBJECT  :  State Route 63

           SUMMARY  :  Designates a segment of State Route (SR) 63 as the  
          Greatest Generation Memorial Highway.  Specifically,  this bill  :   


          1)Describes the contributions of the generation of Americans  
            that served in World War II and the unique role played by the  
            City of Visalia at that time.  

          2)Notes that a Greatest Generation World War II mural, which is  
            72 feet wide and 19 feet high and depicts and symbolizes  
            events and people throughout the war, is located at 26572  
            South Mooney Boulevard, also known as SR 63.  

          3)Designates the 1.6 mile portion of SR 63 from West Visalia  
            Parkway to Avenue 264 in Visalia as the Greatest Generation  
            Memorial Highway.  

          4)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to  
            determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the  
            signing requirements for the state highway system showing this  
            special designation and, upon receiving donations from  
            nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those  
            signs.  

           EXISTING LAW  :  Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating  
          and maintaining state highways.  This includes the installation  
          and maintenance of highway signs.  

           FISCAL EFFECT  :  Unknown

           COMMENTS  :  According to the author, "The 'Greatest Generation  
          Memorial Highway' is meant to commemorate and honor Visalia's  
          World War II Veterans while recognizing the common values, duty,  
          honor, and courage that united this generation of Visalians  
          during World War II. The City of Visalia itself played an  
          important role, with the Visalia Municipal Airport being leased  
          by the Army as the 'Visalia Army Air Field' during this time

          where important activities such as air submarine patrols were  
          active."  

          In honor of those efforts, a 1368 square-foot "Greatest  
          Generation World War II" mural, depicting and symbolizing events  
          and people throughout the war, is located on Visalia's South  
          Mooney Boulevard, which is the local designation for SR 63.
