SUMMARY : Designates a segment of State Route (SR) 46 as the
Medal of Honor Recipient Larry Stanley Pierce Memorial Highway.
The Senate amendments add the phrase "Medal of Honor Recipient"
to the title of the route segment designation and make minor
wording changes to the body of the resolution.
EXISTING LAW assigns the Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
the responsibility of operating and maintaining state highways.
This responsibility includes the installation and maintenance of
highway signs.
AS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY , this bill was substantially similar
to the version passed in the Senate.
FISCAL EFFECT : According to the Senate Appropriations
Committee, pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8, negligible state costs.
COMMENTS : Larry Stanley Pierce was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S.
Army and served in the 1st Battalion of the 173rd Airborne
Brigade. He was assigned as a squad leader in charge of a
reconnaissance platoon during the Vietnam War, where on
September 20, 1965, he and his platoon were ambushed by hostile
forces with machine gun fire.
Sgt. Pierce and his platoon routed the ambushing force and gave
chase in order to further suppress the attacking enemy. Upon
discovering an antipersonnel mine that could have destroyed his
entire squad, he used his own body to absorb the blast from the
mine, saving the lives of 29 of his soldiers.

Larry Stanley Pierce was laid to rest at the Wasco Memorial Park
in the City of Wasco and was posthumously awarded the Medal of
Honor by President Lyndon Johnson.
