           SUMMARY  

          This measure designates, as the "Bracero Memorial Highway," the  
          15-mile stretch of State Route 101 between exits 302 and 317 in  
          Monterey County.

           FISCAL EFFECT  

          Minor costs to Caltrans to make and erect appropriate signs;  
          these costs are covered by donations.  (State Highway Account.)

           COMMENTS  

           Purpose  .  This measure is recognize the contributions and  
          sacrifice of Braceros-Mexican nationals who were originally  
          contracted to work mostly in the agriculture and railroad  
          industries in the Salinas Valley in order to alleviate a labor  
          shortage during World War II.  The resolution describes two  
          vehicular incidents, in 1958 and 1963, where a total of 46  
          Braceros died and 41 were injured.
