Original Committee Reference: TRANS.
SUMMARY : Recognizes an area in Los Angeles as the El Salvador
Community Corridor.
The Senate amendments : Condition this bill's request for
freeway signage upon the Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
determining that the statutory criteria for such signage (the
name of the community is culturally unique and historically
significant, the general public and media commonly recognize the
name of the community, the local governing body has adopted a
resolution that designates the name of the community, etc.) have
been met.
EXISTING LAW :
1)Makes no specific provision for naming particular local
communities or neighborhoods.
2)Assigns Caltrans the responsibility to operate and maintain
state highways. This includes the installation and
maintenance of highway signs.
AS PASSED BY THE ASSEMBLY , this bill was substantially similar
to the version passed by the Senate.
FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown
COMMENTS : The author notes that over 500,000 El Salvadorans
reside in the City of Los Angeles and have contributed to
improving the quality of life in that city. A large majority of
the city's El Salvadoran population lives in the Pico Union area
of Los Angeles. Consequently, this bill would recognize the Los
Angeles locale between Adams Boulevard and 11th Street on
Vermont Boulevard as the El Salvador Community Corridor.
