SUBJECT : State Route 53
SUMMARY : Designates a segment of State Route (SR) 53 as the
Lake County Veterans Memorial Highway. Specifically, this bill :
1)Recounts the life and career of Lance Corporal Ivan Wilson a
member of the United States Marine who died in 2008 while
supporting combat operations in Afghanistan during Operation
Enduring Freedom.
2)Recognizes the importance of appreciating, admiring, and
honoring the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces
of the United States of America to protect and defend our
country and the freedom, rights, and privileges enjoyed by all
Americans.
3)Designates the segment of SR 53 from its junction with SR 29
in Lower Lake to the junction of SR 20 in Clearlake Oaks as
the Lake County Veterans Memorial Highway.
4)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to
determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the
signing requirements for the state highway system, showing
this special designation and, upon receiving donations from
nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs.
EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation
and maintenance of highway signs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown
COMMENTS : The author notes that there are over 24 million
American veterans, with 2 million of then residing in
California. He points to the supreme sacrifice made by Marine
Lance Corporal Ivan Wilson in Afghanistan as emblematic of the
contributions service members have made in defending this
country. As a means of expressing the state's appreciation for

their efforts, he is proposing to designate a segment of SR 53
as the Lake County Veterans Memorial Highway.
