By designating this segment of SR 53 as the Lake County
Memorial Highway, it will be an expression of appreciation
to the two million veterans in California and to their
brothers and sisters in arms who reside in Lake County and
the service they are provide to the country and the state.
This resolution to honor all veterans was inspired by the
death of Lance Corporal Ivan Wilson, who joined the United
States Marine Corps in 2005. In 2007, he served in Iraq
with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine
Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. In 2008 he was
ordered to Afghanistan and on July 21, 2008, Lance Corporal
Wilson died while supporting combat operations in
Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Lance
Corporal Wilson was the first member of the military from
Lake County to lose his life in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
