SUBJECT : State Route 10
SUMMARY : Designates a segment of State Route (SR) 10 as the CHP
Officer Johnny R. Martinez Memorial Highway. Specifically, this
bill :
1)Recounts the life and career of Johnny Ramirez Martinez, A
California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer who was killed in the
line of duty.
2)Designates a segment of SR 10 as the CHP Officer Johnny R.
Martinez Memorial Highway
3)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to
determine the costs of erecting the appropriate signs,
consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway
system, showing these special designations, and upon receiving
donations from non-state sources covering the cost, to erect
those signs.
EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways. This includes the installation
and maintenance of highway signs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown
COMMENTS : Johnny Martinez joined the US Marine Corps shortly
after graduation from high school. He proudly served for four
years, reaching the rank of Sergeant and serving in Vietnam. He
later attended and graduated from the CHP Academy and was
assigned to the East Los Angeles Area.
Officer Martinez, badge number 8813, was killed in the line of
duty on October 2, 1981. While clearing debris from the San
Bernardino Freeway, he and his partner were gunned down by two
paranoid robbery suspects. Although he was rushed to the
hospital, Officer Martinez succumbed to his injuries and died at
Alhambra Community Hospital.
