SUMMARY
This bill extends the sunset of the State of California
Acupuncture Board (Board) from January 1, 2011 to January 1,
2017.
FISCAL EFFECT
Annual fee-supported special fund costs of $1.5 million to $2
million until 2017 to extend the Board sunset date and continue
oversight of professionals practicing acupuncture. The Board
provides oversight of scope of practice, licensure, and
educational accreditation.
COMMENTS
1)Rationale . This bill is sponsored by the Council of
Acupuncture and Oriental Medical Associations (CAOMA) to
continue support and oversight of the practice of acupuncture.
CAOMA is a collection of eastern medicine professional
membership organizations emphasizing acupuncture and other
non-western treatments as primary care. This bill extends the
sunset date of the Board from January 2011 to January 2017.
The sunset extension will allow the Board to continue the
licensing and oversight of more than 9,000 licensed
acupuncture professionals statewide.
2) Related Legislation . SB 963 (Ridley-Thomas), Chapter 385,
Statutes of 2008 extended the sunset on eight boards under the
jurisdiction of the Department of Consumer Affairs, including
the Acupuncture Board.
