SUBJECT : Water use: Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta watershed
SUMMARY : Requires the Department of Water Resources to include
a report in its California Water Plan update. Specifically, this
bill requires the Department of Water Resources to consider the
state's goal of reducing reliance on the Sacramento-San Joaquin
Delta in its water planning.
EXISTING LAW:
1)Requires the Department of Water Resources to plan for the
orderly and coordinated control, protection, conservation,
development, and utilization of the water resources of the
state.
2)Requires the Department of Water Resources to update the
California Water Plan every five years and to study the amount
of water needed to meet the state's future needs.
3)Requires the Department of Water Resources to estimate in the
California Water Plan the current and projected amounts of
water that are available to meet California's needs including,
but not limited to, groundwater, surface water, conserved
water, and recycled water.
4)Requires the Department of Water Resources to include a
discussion of the various alternatives for improving and
protecting the current uses and configurations of the
Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.
5)Establishes that it is the policy of the state to reduce
reliance on the Delta in meeting California's future water
supply needs.
FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown
COMMENTS : This bill integrates the state's policy of reducing
reliance on Delta water supplies into the Department of Water
Resource's current water planning exercise.
