AB 2607, as introduced, De Leon. Pest control: shipments: wood
pallets: study.
Existing law generally regulates the shipment of articles for
purposes of pest control.
This bill would require the Department of Food and Agriculture, in
conjunction with the University of California Cooperative Extension
and in consultation with certain state agencies, to conduct a study
of the health and safety issues of wood pallets used for shipping and
the risks they may pose to the state's food supply. The bill would
also require the study to evaluate sustainable and recyclable
alternatives to wood pallets in California. The bill would require
the department to report its findings and recommendations to the
Legislature on or before February 1, 2012.

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The Department of Food and Agriculture shall work in
conjunction with the University of California Cooperative Extension
to conduct a study of the health and safety issues of wood pallets
used for shipping and the risks they may pose to the state's food
supply. The study shall also evaluate sustainable and recyclable
alternatives to wood pallets in California. The department shall
consult with the California Health and Human Services Agency and the
California Environmental Protection Agency in conducting the study.
The department shall report its findings and recommendations to the
Legislature on or before February 1, 2012.
