                    SCR 12 (Dutton) - As Amended: April 13, 2009

           SENATE VOTE : 37-0

          SUBJECT : State Route 330

SUMMARY : Designates a segment of State Route (SR) 330 as the
Steve Faris Memorial Highway. Specifically, this bill :

1)Recounts the career of Steve Faris, a Battalion Chief with the
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

2)Designates SR 330 in San Bernardino County as the Steve Faris
            Memorial Highway.

3)Requests the Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to
determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the
signing requirements for the state highway system, showing
that special designation and, upon receiving donations from
nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

EXISTING LAW : Assigns Caltrans the responsibility of operating
and maintaining state highways. This responsibility includes
the installation and maintenance of highway signs.

FISCAL EFFECT : Unknown. The bill was removed from the Senate
Appropriations Committee pursuant to Senate Rule 28.8.

COMMENTS : Steve Faris in 1998 helped establish in the Inland
Empire the Mountain Rim Fire Safe Council, which was the first
of more than 14 councils that are now active in the Counties of
San Bernardino and Riverside. He dedicated thousands of hours
in spreading the fire-safe concept throughout the Counties of
          San Bernardino and Riverside.

In 2002, Chief Faris was instrumental in the establishment of
the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST), which brought local,
state, and federal agencies together to address the critical
fire situation presented by the bark beetle-drought tree
mortality issues. The consolidated efforts of MAST and the fire
safe councils contributed significantly to the safe evacuation
