SUMMARY
This Resolution designates September 2009 as Prostate Cancer
Awareness Month to increase the awareness of the importance of
early detection and treatment of prostate cancer.
FISCAL EFFECT
No direct fiscal impact to designate Prostate Cancer Awareness
Month.
COMMENTS
1)Rationale . This resolution designates September 2009 as
Prostate Cancer Awareness month to increase awareness of the
most common cancer in American men. In 2009 approximately
18,000 men in California will be diagnosed with prostate
cancer and 3,100 men will die of the disease. As with many
other cancers, there are many factors that may contribute to
risk for this type of cancer. These factors include age,
family history, diet, and a sedentary lifestyle.
2)Background . Prostate cancer is a slow-growing tumor, with 85%
of cases diagnosed in the early stages of disease. Treatment
options for this type of cancer depend on whether a tumor has
spread. Radiation and surgery are common treatments in early
stages of the disease. During later stages of the disease,
when the tumor has spread beyond the prostate, hormone therapy
is used to lower androgen, the hormone associated with
prostate tumor growth. Following treatment, prostate cancer
survivors are required to continue with medical monitoring
several times a year and then annually to ensure cancerous
activity is not detected.
