ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON RULES
Ted W. Lieu, Chair
SCR 16 (Runner) - As Amended: March 2, 2009
SENATE VOTE : 33-0
SUBJECT : DMV/Donate Life California Registry.
SUMMARY : Proclaims April 4, 2009, as DMV/Donate Life
California Day and the month of April 2009 as DMV/Donate Life
California Month; and encourages all Californians to sign up
with the Donate Life California Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.
Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1) An individual's donation of the heart, lungs, liver,
kidneys, pancreas, and small intestine can save up to eight
lives; a donation of tissue can save and enhance up to 50
others; and a single blood donation can help three people in
need.
2) Currently, more than 20,000 Californians and nearly
100,000 individuals nationwide are on the national organ
transplant wait list; and while about one-third of these
patients receive a transplant each year, another one-third
die while waiting, due to a shortage of donated organs.
3) California residents can register with the Donate Life
California Registry when applying for or renewing their
driver's licenses or identification cards at the Department
of Motor Vehicles (DMV); and more than four million
Californians have joined together to save and enhance lives
by becoming registered donors..
