After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Mr.
Carpenter joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and
was initially assigned to Bakersfield, but after two
transfers he made his way back to Auburn, where he lived
for the rest of his life and from where he ran, and
          narrowly lost, for State Senate.

His family members report that Mr. Carpenter was generous
with those in need, giving rides, burgers, or even a stay
in his home to those in need. He was an outdoorsman, a
          Freemason, and a family man.

In 1970, after 13 years with the CHP, Officer Carpenter
died after being shot by the driver of a vehicle he had
stopped. He was survived by his wife, six children, and
          four step-children.

This resolution designates the interchange of State Highway
Route 80 and Rocklin Road in Placer County as the "CHP
Officer Raymond Carpenter Memorial Interchange." The
resolution further requests the Department of
Transportation to erect appropriate signs upon receiving
donations from non-state sources to cover the costs.
