SUBJECT : Kidney Cancer Awareness Month

DIGEST : This resolution proclaims March 2009 as Kidney
Cancer Awareness Month in California.
ANALYSIS : Kidney cancer is among the most common cancers
in both men and women. The American Cancer Society
estimates that, each year, more than 54,390 people in the
United States are diagnosed with kidney cancer. Of those
diagnosed with kidney cancer, 33,130 are men, and 21,260
are women. More than 100,000 survivors of kidney cancer
now live in the United States.
Kidney cancer has few symptoms and is usually undiagnosed
until later states or until it has spread to other areas of
the body and becomes harder to treat. Other than surgery,
the most commonly used treatments for kidney cancer are
immunotherapy, radiation, and chemotherapy. Breakthroughs
in research over the last year have given renewed hope to
patients who previously had few treatment options.

ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT : In supporting the resolution, the
National Kidney Foundation writes, "Kidney health is an
important public concern as instances of obesity,
hypertension, and diabetes are contributing factors to
kidney disease and are on the rise. By proclaiming March
2009 as Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, SCR 7 will help
educate the public about kidney cancer and highlight the
need for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease programs and
prevention."
