SUBJECT : American Heart Month and Wear Red Day

DIGEST : This resolution recognizes the month of February
2010 as American Heart Month in California, recognizes
February 4, 2010 as Wear Red Day in California, and urges
public support for Go Red for Women events.
Assembly Amendments add co-authors.
ANALYSIS : This resolution makes the following
legislative findings:

1. Diseases of the heart are the leading cause of death and
stroke and is the third leading cause of death in
California and the United States.
2. In 2009, the direct and indirect costs of cardiovascular
disease and stroke in the United States is estimated to
be $503.2 billion.
3. Cardiovascular diseases claim the lives of over 460,000
American women each year, approximately one death per
minute.
4. Each year, 53 percent of all cardiovascular disease and
61 percent of stroke deaths occur in women.
5. More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next
five leading causes of death combined, including all
cancers.
6. Only 21 percent of women perceive heart disease as their
greatest risk.
7. The American Heart Association is committed to
conducting and supporting medical research that advances
knowledge in the areas of prevention and treatment of
heart disease and stroke.
8. The American Heart Association strives to inform all
citizens about the critical importance of tools and
skills that will increase the survival rate of men and
women from heart disease and stroke.
9. February is designated as American Heart Month and the
American Heart Association will encourage citizens to
learn the warning signs and risk factors of heart
disease and stroke.
10.Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association's
national call to increase awareness of heart disease,
the leading cause of death for women, and to inspire
women to take charge of their heart health.
11.All women should learn their own personal risk for heart
disease, using tools like the American Heart

Association's Go Red for Women Heart Checkup, and by
talking to their health care provider.
12.By choosing to Speak Up about heart disease we can save
lives using the power of our own voices.
13.Making the right choices relating to proper nutrition,
physical activity, doctor visits, and other lifestyle
methods is essential to living a heart healthy life.
14.Wear Red Day is recognized nationwide each year to
highlight the Go Red for Women campaign.
This resolution recognizes the month of February 2010 as

2010 as Wear Red Day in California, and urges public
support for Go Red for Women events.
