Memorial Highway" and a segment of SR 83 as the
"Correctional Officer Jesus 'Jesse' Sanchez Memorial
Highway".
Assembly Amendments designate a section of SR 83 as the
"Correctional Officer Jesus 'Jesse' Sanchez Memorial
Highway."
ANALYSIS : After serving six years in the United States
Navy during the Vietnam War and graduating from the San
Bernardino County Sheriff's Academy, Officer Miller joined
the Chino Police Department in 1988. Officer Miller was a
well-liked and respected officer and a stabilizing force in
his patrol unit. He became involved in family and
community activities, including the United States Naval Sea
Cadets Corps.
On February 1, 2000, Officer Miller made a routine traffic
stop in the City of Chino, and while approaching the
stopped vehicle, was struck from behind by a second
vehicle, whose driver was under the influence of alcohol.
Officer Miller was critically injured and died while
undergoing surgery at a nearby trauma center.
Jesse Sanchez graduated from Correctional Officers School
in Soledad and, in 1972, became a permanent correctional
officer at the California Institution for Men. Tragically
and shortly thereafter, he and his partner were ambushed
while escorting a prisoner to the San Bernardino County
Court in Chino.
