ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON RULES
Nancy Skinner, Chair
SCR 111 (Wright) - As Introduced: June 3, 2010
SENATE VOTE : 34-0
SUBJECT : California Chronic Kidney Disease Education Week.
SUMMARY : Proclaims November 7 through November 13, 2010, as
California Chronic Kidney Disease Education Week, and urges all
Californians to familiarize themselves with the causes of
chronic kidney disease and the importance of intervention to
promote sustained health and a better quality of life.
Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1)Uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes
are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease in the
United States; and chronic kidney disease is estimated to be
present in approximately 31 million Americans, many of who are
unaware of the problem.
2)Chronic kidney disease can progress to end-stage renal disease
(ESRD), which requires a continuous course of dialysis therapy
or a kidney transplant to maintain life; and there are more
than 50,000 people with ESRD in California.
3)There is no cure for chronic kidney disease; but public policy
initiatives targeted at early identification for controlling
risk factors and early intervention can reduce both the
serious long-term effects of chronic kidney disease on the
population, and the significant economic burden on individuals
and society.
