ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON RULES
Nancy Skinner, Chair
HR 36 (Hill) - As Introduced: August 7, 2012
SUBJECT : California State Highway System.
SUMMARY : Commemorates the 100th anniversary of the
groundbreaking, in the County of San Mateo, of the California
State Highway System on August 7, 2012. Specifically, this
resolution makes the following legislative findings:
1)The recognition of a statewide highway system of roadways can
be traced back as far as 1769, with the King's Highway, El
Camino Real, to facilitate travel between the missions of
California; and, in 1895, the Legislature created the Bureau
of Highways, which marked the beginning of a desire to
establish a statewide system of navigable roadways.
2)The California State Highway System was established by the
State Highways Act of 1909, which was ratified by the People
of California on November 8, 1910, and the California Highway
Commission was then created to oversee highway construction,
maintenance, and control of the state highway system.
3)In 1912, the California Highway Commission awarded State
Highway Project 1 in the County of San Mateo, in front of
historic Uncle Tom's Cabin, on Highway 1, on El Camino Real
within the City of San Bruno; which today is known as State
Highway Route 82.
4)Today the California State Highway System includes 15,181.36
miles of navigable roads, with more than 14 billion vehicle
miles of travel every month.
