SUBJECT : Women in sports.
SUMMARY : Commemorates the 40th anniversary of Title IX,
commends the movement toward increased equality and fair
treatment of female athletes, and praises the goals of greater
opportunities in sports for girls and young women in California.
Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative
findings:
1)For the first time in United States Olympic history, women
athletes outnumbered men, 269 to 261 in the 2012 London
Olympics; and, nearly 3 months after the 40th anniversary of
Title IX, 58 of the United States' 104 medals were awarded to
women or women's teams with 29 of them gold.
2)Of the total number of medals claimed by the United States,
Californians brought home more medals than any other state.
3)Every country that participated in the Olympics was
represented by at least one woman for the first time in
Olympic history; and, this advancement is significant to women
all over the world.
