SUBJECT : Peace Corps Month.
SUMMARY : Declares the month of March 2011 as Peace Corps Month
in California and commends the United States Peace Corps on the
occasion of its 50th anniversary. Specifically, this resolution
makes the following legislative findings:
1)The Peace Corps has become an enduring symbol of our nation's
commitment to encourage progress, create opportunity, and
expand development at the grassroots level in the developing
world; and March 1, 2011, marks the 50th anniversary of
President John F. Kennedy's signing of Executive Order 10924
which established the Peace Corps.
2)Since 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served as Peace
Corps volunteers; and, California is the largest source of
Peace Corps volunteers in the nation with 27,300 men and women
serving over the past 50 years.
3)Peace Corps volunteers have made significant and lasting
contributions around the world in agriculture, education,
health, business development, and the environment; thereby
improving the lives of others around the world and
strengthening the friendship and understanding between the
people of the United States and other countries.
