DIGEST : This resolution names a portion of State Highway
Route 8 in Imperial County as the Deputy Probation Officer
Irene B. Rios Memorial Highway.
ANALYSIS : The author has introduced this resolution to
honor the memory of Irene B. Rios, who gave her life in the
line of duty as a probation officer.
Irene Rios was born in Brawley, Irene Rios grew up in
Holtville. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in
criminal justice administration from San Diego State

University, Imperial Valley Campus, Ms. Rios began working
for the Betty Jo McNeece Receiving Home in 2002. In 2005,
she became a Deputy Probation Officer for the Juvenile
Division of Imperial County. On August 13, 2008, while
traveling in a department vehicle on State Highway Route
(SR) 8 in Imperial County, to a placement visit in
Sacramento, Ms. Rios was involved in an accident, and her
vehicle overturned. Deputy Rios died from the injuries she
sustained in the accident.
This resolution designates the westbound portion of SR 8
between mileposts 4.60 and 6.60 in Imperial County as the
"Deputy Probation Officer Irene B. Rios Memorial Highway."
This resolution further requests the Department of
Transportation to erect appropriate signs only upon
receiving donations from non-state sources sufficient to
cover the cost.
