SUBJECT : Suicide Prevention Week.
SUMMARY : Proclaims September 4 through September 10, 2011 as
Suicide Prevention Week. Specifically, this resolution makes
the following legislative findings:
1)Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United
States taking a life every 15.2 minutes; and, a great many
suicides are preventable.
2)Suicide is the third leading cause of death among individuals
who are 15 to 24 years of age; and, 50.2 % of those suicides
were done using a firearm.
3)2010 was the second consecutive year that the United States
military lost more troops to suicide than in combat in Iraq
and Afghanistan.
4)In 2007, 18% of Hispanic adolescents reported seriously
considering attempting suicide in the last year, which is a
proportion higher than reported by their non-Hispanic
classmates.
5)The American Association of Suicidology is dedicated to
reducing the frequency of suicide attempts and death through
education, research, intervention services, bereavement
services and encouragement of initiatives based on the goals
contained in the National Strategy Prevention Plan.
6)The California Department of Mental Health, Office of Suicide
Prevention, has created the California Strategic Plan on
Suicide Prevention to address the need to prevent suicides and
has supported statewide and local projects launched under the
Mental Health Services Act.
